The Cape Wools Merino indicator traded higher by 6.8% and 1161 points

MARKANALISE

Daar is in totaal 9,767  bale aangebied, waarvan 97.6% verkoop is. Die koper was Stucken. Baie geluk met die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSES

In Port Elizabeth the 9th wool auction of the 2019/20 season took place and the Cape Wools Merino indicator traded higher by 6.8% and 1161 points and closed at a clean price of R181.48/kg. The Australian EMI increased by 3.2% as well this week. The Rand traded 3.3% weaker against the US Dollar this week and 3.6%weaker against the Euro, compared to the previous sale. The fairly solid run of the market this week can be attributed to the increase in the Australian market as well as the weakening of the Rand, which had a significant influence on the second day of the auction. This week's offer consisted of high quality, long and medium length Merino wool which saw good competition between the buyers.Shorter types were under pressure due to a still limited offer. The largest increase of 7% was in the 21.5 micron and 22.5 micron segments. Modiano was the major buyer on the auction this week, followed by Standard Wool, Lempriere SA and Tianyu SA.

A totalof 9,767 bales were on offer, of which 97.6% was sold. On the OVK auction 3,400bales were offered of which 96.1% was sold. The highest price of R147.10/kg wasachieved for a 1 bale lot AH of 16.8 microns, from the clip of  JH du Plessis from Trompsburg. The buyer was Stucken. Congratulations on the achievement!

FORECAST

This week the SA wool market followed the Australian market and performed even better. The main reason for the upward movement in the wool market can be attributed to the fact that the offer consisted of good quality long and medium length top making styles Merino wool which resulted in healthy competition among buyers. An improvement in the Australian market, was an additional stabilizing factor in the market. The weakening of the Rand against major currencies though, especially on the second day of the auction, contributed to the increase in the local market. The overall result of the auction this week is encouraging, given the volatility in the wool market during the past few weeks. Volumes remains under pressure though, as a result of the still pressing drought in large parts of production areas in South Africa. The volumes of wool received in the stores of the brokers this week, are nearly 3% lower compared to the same time of the previous season. Producers are starting to realize the value and put more focus on the importance of set industry standards, such as "Responsible Wool Standards", for assuring future competition in the international environment. We want to re-assure that OVK is committed to assist our producers in the obtaining of such certification. Producers must also still put focus on bio-security and ensure that flock health enjoys priority and that herds are vaccinated against diseases such as Rift Valley Fever. It is also crucial that producers, especially in the drought stricken areas, ensure that the feeding status must enjoy priority, in order to optimize production and reproduction.By the application of strategic mineral and vitamin supplements, the immune systems of production animals as well as lambs can be stimulated, which will increase production and reproduction.  It is also very important that producers make sure of the animal health status of animals bought from different areas, to ensure that diseases like “Johnes’ disease”, as well as resistant parasites are not brought onto disease free farms. That could cause enormous negative economic results. The next wool auction is scheduled for 7 November 2019 where 12,068 bales will be on offer. This report by Heinrich Victor, Manager Fibre Operations – OVK.
