MARKANALISE

Daar is in totaal 11,418 bale aangebied, waarvan 95.7% verkoop is. Die koper was Modiano. Baie geluk op die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSES

In Port Elizabeth the 8th wool auction of the 2019/20 season took place and the Cape Wools Merino indicator traded by 0.5% and 80 points higher and closed at a clean price of R169.87/kg. The Australian EMI increased by 1.9% as well this week. The Rand traded 1.5% stronger against the US Dollar this week and 1.3% stronger against the Euro, compared to the previous sale. The market remained steady this week despite the somewhat downward trend on the first day of the auction, followed the Australian market on the second day and improved. This week's offer consisted of high quality, good length Merino wool which caused good competition between the buyers and outperformed the market in that sector. Shorter types were under pressure due to a limited offer which meant that buyers could not obtain enough volumes to fill containers. The largest increase of 2.3% was in the 18 micron segment. Lempriere SA was the major buyer on the auction this week, followed by Modiano, Standard Wool and Tianyu SA. A total of 11,418 bales were on offer, of which 95.7% was sold. On the OVK auction 2,392 bales were offered of which 97% was sold. The highest price of R141.10/kg was achieved for a 1 bale lot AFH of 17.7 microns, from the clip of CJ Scheepers from Trompsburg. The buyer was Modiano. Congratulations on this achievement!

FORECAST

This week the SA wool market followed the Australian market and traded higher.  The main reason for the upward movement in the wool market can be attributed to the fact that the offer consisted of good quality long top making styles Merino wool which resulted in healthy competition amongst buyers. An improvement in the Australian market on the second day of the auction, was an additional stabilising factor in the market.  The strengthening of the Rand against major currencies though, prevented a bigger increase in the local market. The overall result of the auction this week is encouraging, given the volatility in the wool market during the past few weeks. Volumes world-wide also remains under pressure, as a result of the still pressing draughts in large parts of Australia and South Africa. The volumes of wool received in the stores of the brokers this week, are nearly 13.5% lower compared to the same time of the previous season. In Australia the offer on this week’s auction decreased by 17.5% compared to the same auction of the previous season.  Producers must put more focus on the importance of set industry standards, such as "Responsible Wool Standards", for assuring future competition in the international environment. We want to give further assurance that OVK is committed to assist our producers in the obtaining of such certification. Producers must also still put focus on bio-security and ensure that flock health enjoys priority and that herds are vaccinated against diseases such as Rift Valley Fever. If good rains will occur during spring and early summer in areas which suffered previous outbreaks, history might repeat itself with catastrophic economic consequences for the industry. It is also very important that producers make sure of the animal health status of animals bought from different areas, to ensure that diseases like “Johnes’ disease”,  as well as resistant parasites are not brought onto disease free farms. That could cause enormous negative economic results. The next wool auction is scheduled for 31 October 2019 where 9,524 bales will be on offer.
