The light weakening of the Rand against major currencies though, prevented a bigger decline

MARKANALISE

Daar is in totaal 8,034 bale aangebied, waarvan 87.6% verkoop is. Die koper was Lempriere SA. Baie geluk met die prestasie!

MARKVOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSES

In Port Elizabeth the 4th wool auction of the 2019/20 season took place and the Cape Wools Merino indicator traded lower by 2.7% and 471 points, and closed at a clean price of R167.60/kg. The Australian EMI decreased by 3.2% accordingly this week. The Rand traded 2.0% weaker against the US Dollar this week and 1.8% weaker against the Euro, compared to the previous sale. This week's catalogue consisted of relatively smaller volumes, which resulted in an only one day sale. The offering consisted of good quality length and micron wool, with a limited amount of short wool offered. The largest decrease of 3.1%, was in the 20 micron segment. Lempriere SA was the major buyer on the auction this week, followed by Modiano, Standard Wool and Stucken. A total of 8,034 bales were on offer, of which 87.6% was sold. On the OVK auction 1,668 bales were offered of which 93.2% was sold. The highest price on the OVK auction, of R145.20/kg was for an 1 bale lot CFH of 16.5 micron, from the clip of BA Burger from the Cathcart district. The buyer was Lempriere SA. Congratulations with the achievement!

MARKET FORECAST

This week the SA market again followed the trend in the Australian market and traded lower. The main reason for the decrease in the wool market can be attributed to the fact that the auction took place on a Chinese national holiday, which tempered buyer participation. The light weakening of the Rand against major currencies though, prevented a bigger decline. Major role players in the industry still predict that volatility may proceed in the market for the short and medium term , due to the ongoing trade war between China and the USA, as well as the BREXIT situation in the UK, which may have a negative impact on the European economy. The positive side though, is that the global pipeline of wool, is still fairly empty, which could mean a quick impact on the market, in case of an increasing demand. Volumes worldwide also stays under pressure, mainly as a result of ongoing droughts in Australia as well as in SA. Emphasis is also still placed on sustainability and traceability and producers must realise that it is becoming more important to adhere to set standards such as Responsible Wool Standards, in order to ensure future competition in the international environment. OVK is committed to assist our clients in the obtaining of such certification. Producers must still ensure that flocks are vaccinated against diseases such as Rift Valley Fever. If good rains will fall during early summer in areas where previous outbreaks occurred, history could repeat itself, resulting in catastrophic economical results for the industry. The next wool auction is scheduled for 10 October 2019, where approximately 15,606 bales will be on offer. This report by Heinrich Victor, Manager : Fibre Operations - OVK.
