Op die 33ste veiling van die 2018/19 seisoen, het die wolmark in Port Elizabeth die week hoër verhandel / On the 33rd auction of the 2018/19 season the wool market in Port Elizabeth gained some strength

MARKANALISE

8 986 Bale is in totaal aangebied, waarvan 94.4% verkoop is. Die koper was Modiano. Baie geluk met die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSIS

On the 33rd auction of the 2018/19 season the wool market in Port Elizabeth gained some strength and the Cape Wools all wool indicator increased by 1.8% and 373 points, to close on R205.98/kg (clean). The Australian EMI decreased by 3.3%. This week the Rand weakened against the most important currencies and traded 3.9% weaker against the US Dollar and 3.5% weaker against the Euro, compared to levels during the previous sale. The biggest increase this week of up to 4.8%, was in the 22.5micron segment. The weakening of the Rand this week was the main influence on auction prices amid of the decrease in the Australian EMI. Modiano bought the highest quantity of bales this week, followed by Standard Wool, Tianyu SA and Lempriere.

8 986 bales were on offer in total, of which 94.4% were sold. On the OVK auction, 2 654 bales were on offer of which 97.4% were sold. The highest price on the OVK auction, of R172.00kg, was for a 1 bale lot AH of 18.3 microns, from the clip of CA Davenport from Steynsburg. The buyer was Modiano. Congratulations on the performance!

FORECAST

This week’s increase in the wool price can be predominantly attributed to the exchange rate. The ban on exports to China still plays a significant role though and that is reflected in the slowness in the trade of especially shorter wool. Cape Wools reports that negotiations between role players in China and SA is continuing and we hope to reach a positive outcome soon. The situation could continue for still some time though and producers are therefore advised to, if possible, customize their shearing pattern in order to produce a longer wool, because wools of lengths less than 65mm, are experiencing the highest pressure, for these are the types which are mostly exported to China. In SA, receivals of wool this week is 44% lower compared to the same week of the previous season and accumulated, 13.61% less than the 2017/18 season. Fibre from Lesotho is still not received in the South African market, because of bureaucratic red tape by the authorities to issue permits. International emphasis on sustainability and traceability is at the order of the day and sustainable farming practices will therefore have to enjoy more attention, also in the fibre industry, in order to compete internationally. Producers must also ensure that flocks are vaccinated against diseases such as Rift Valley Fever, Anthrax, etc., in order to prevent outbreaks that could again result in huge economic losses. Ensure therefore that an integrated vaccination and dosing program is followed and maintained at all times, together with sufficient feeding. The last wool auction of the wool selling season is scheduled for the 5th of June 2019 where 10 838 bales will be on offer. This report by Heinrich Victor, Operational Manager Fibre - OVK
